this drawing was inspired by a friend, it’s about community and growth and how we help each other to achieve more than any of us could alone.
Four of Wands Reversed
I started this drawing a few days after beginning to seriously consider the possibility that I might be transgender. I sketched out the shapes as a way of trying to process my emotions, but quickly got caught up in them and left the drawing unfinished for months as I threw everything into my transition. I felt like I had to pick the perfect set of complementary colors because this drawing was so important to me, and the perfectionism paralyzed me.
Today, I felt inspired to finish it using some colored pencils I was gifted by a close friend for my first birthday after coming out. Although the emotions that swept me away when I first started this drawing are gone, new ones have emerged in their place and finishing it helped me both process these new emotions and understand the connection between where I have been and where I am now. I felt like I could trust myself more now, and I picked the colors without thinking too hard about it, but I’m happy with how it turned out. It was always meant to be a drawing of wands, and so it made sense to me to name it after the tarot card that represents privately celebrating a small milestone of an ongoing journey.
